FATE in Review is our biennial, peer-reviewed journal for foundations education research
FATE in Review is the peer-reviewed journal of Foundations in Art: Theory and Education.
Published digitally, the journal is a vital platform for scholarly discourse in foundations education, featuring research articles, case studies, reviews, and creative work from artists, designers, historians, and educators across the field. The journal reflects the full breadth of our community.
Contributions range from pedagogical research and critical essays to studio practice and artwork, and submissions are welcome from FATE members and the wider field alike.
All scholarly submissions undergo anonymous peer review, and our editors provide feedback and mentorship to authors throughout the process, an approach that mirrors the supportive spirit of FATE itself.
FATE in Review is archived and accessible through academic databases including ProQuest and EBSCO, extending the reach of our members’ scholarship well beyond the organization.

Submit your original research, article, or report for the next issue by September 1, 2026. Open to non-members.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Categories & Requirements
We are seeking diverse content streams to reflect the breadth of our field, ranging from traditional research to innovative digital formats.
- Original Research: The standard scholarly article; includes data, analysis, and deep inquiry into foundations theory or institutional landscapes, 4000 -5000 words.
- Brief Report: Focused updates, teaching reflections, or preliminary findings on new pedagogical methods, 1500 – 3000 words.
- Reviews & Interviews: Critiques of books, teaching materials, exhibitions, podcasts, or structured interviews with artist-educators.
- Additional Content Streams: We also welcome submissions of Studio-Based Projects and those specifically designed for digital formats.
Formatting & Styles
To maintain consistency and academic rigor, all submissions must strictly adhere to the following style guide:
- Style Manual: Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS), 18th Edition.
- Citation Format: Notes and Bibliography system (using footnotes and a comprehensive bibliography).
- Visuals: Authors are responsible for image clearing and providing high-resolution files if accepted for layout.
- Identifying Information: Please make sure to remove identifying information from the paper submission. Identifying information is part of the “Author Section” of the submission form.

When preparing your submission, consider how your work addresses these core areas:
- Re[focusing] Pedagogy: Looking past the expected to better support students today and prepare them for tomorrow.
- Re[focusing] Feedback: Using inclusive, neurodiverse, and restorative methods that work for everyone.
- Re[focusing] Social Responsibility: Reevaluating the artist/designer’s role in 21st-century global politics and health.
- Re[focusing] Studio Practice: Challenging traditional models of making and materials to cultivate expansive inquiry.
- Re[focusing] Technological Intersections: Adapting pedagogy through the inclusion or rejection of Artificial Intelligence.
