About the Conference

 

What is FATE?

FATE stands for Foundations in Art: Theory and Education. It is a national association dedicated to the promotion of excellence in the development and teaching of college-level foundation courses in both studio, design, and art history.

 

What is the FATE Conference?

The FATE Conference is a biennial event that brings together educators, scholars, and professionals in the field of art and design education. It offers a platform for sharing ideas, research, and best practices in foundation-level art and design education.

 

When and where is the FATE Conference 2025?

The FATE Conference 2025 will be held from April 10-12, 2025, at the Hilton Tysons Corner in Tysons, Virginia and it is hosted by George Mason University.

 

Registration

 

How do I register for the FATE Conference?

Registration opens Monday, September 9th, 2024. Visit https://www.foundationsart.org/ and follow the links to register.

 

Do I need to be a FATE member to attend the conference?

Yes. If you're not already a member of FATE, you'll be prompted to join before registering.

 

What are the registration fees for the conference?

Fees vary by your professional level and registration period. Conference rates are as follows:

 

1. Early Registration (September 9 - November 1, 2024):

   - Full-Time Faculty: $425

   - Part-Time Faculty: $350

   - Student: $250

 

2. Regular Registration (November 2, 2024 - January 24, 2025):

   - Full-Time Faculty: $475

   - Part-Time Faculty: $400

   - Student: $285

 

3. Late Registration (January 25 - March 30, 2025):

   - Full-Time Faculty: $525

   - Part-Time Faculty: $500

   - Student: $370

4. On-Site Registration (April 10-12, 2025):

   - Full-Time Faculty: $525

   - Part-Time Faculty: $500

   - Student: $370

 

How are registration categories defined?

  • Full-Time Faculty: Includes all faculty who are employed full-time.

  • Part-Time Faculty/Other: Includes all faculty who teach part-time, excluding graduate teaching assistants, and independent scholars.

  • Student: Applies to anyone currently enrolled in a graduate program.

 

What is included in the registration fees?

Registration to the Biennial FATE Conference includes:

  • Access to 65+ breakout sessions and workshops

  • Breakfast and lunch on April 10th and 11th, breakfast only on the 12th

  • Transportation to Friday's off-site Members exhibition + reception

  • Refreshments between breakout sessions

 

What are the possible additional costs of attending?

Additional costs include travel, lodging, and some meals. Your travel costs will depend on where you are traveling from.

 

What payment methods are accepted for conference registration?

All major credit and debit cards are accepted through PayPal. A PayPal account is not required for registration.

 

If I change my mind about attending, is a refund possible?

Cancellation/refund requests for any reason, including health or weather, will not be possible due to the financial commitment we have made on your behalf. For questions about FATE's refund policy, please contact info@foundationsart.org.

Are there discounts if you are presenting a paper or chairing a panel?
All people attending the conference for all reasons need to purchase a FATE Membership and 2025 Conference registration.

Lodging

 

Are there special rates for lodging offered at the conference hotel?
Yes, there is a limited number of hotel rooms available at the conference hotel on a first-come, first-served basis. The Conference will be held at Hilton Tysons Corner. Discounted rooms for April 9 are sold out, please contact the Hilton Tysons Corner hotel for room options for April 9th. Room rates for April 10th, 11th, & 12th are:
- Single/Double: $179
- Triple: $189
- Quad: $199

How do I book a hotel room?
Hotel rooms may be reserved here.

How long do I have to make a reservation at the conference hotel?
Registration for hotel rooms closes March 12th, 2025, or when all available rooms are sold, whichever comes first.

 

What is the cancellation policy for hotel reservations?
Please contact the Hilton Tysons Corner for their cancellation policy.

 

Conference Program

Where can I find the conference program schedule?
The conference schedule will be posted to the FATE website four weeks prior to the conference.

What events take place at the conference?
The conference includes:

  • 65+ in-person breakout sessions and workshops

  • Breakfast and lunch on April 10th and 11th, breakfast only on the 12th

  • Transportation to Friday's off-site Members exhibition + reception

  • Refreshments between breakout sessions

  • Keynote lecture by Sheldon Scott

Presenters

How can I become a presenter at the conference?
The presentations for the 2025 FATE conference are now closed.

Do I need to be a member to present and attend the conference?
Yes, a FATE membership and conference registration is required to present at the conference.

What AV equipment is available for the conference for my presentation?
FATE provides TV screens and projectors for presentations and workshops. 

What do I need to bring for my presentation?
Presenters are responsible for their own laptops, presentation design, audio speakers, and dongles.

Will FATE provide materials for my workshop?
Depending on the proposed workshop, FATE may be able to support workshop materials. Please contact fate2025@gmu.edu for more information.

Is there an option to present virtually?
Virtual sessions are not permitted, and all panel chairs, workshops, and presenters must be prepared to present in person at the conference. If a documented accommodation is needed, please contact info@foundationsart.org.

What are my responsibilities as presenters at the conference?
Presenters are responsible for:

  • Developing high-quality presentations prior to your scheduled session at the conference.

  • Maintaining communication with your session chair and the FATE conference planning team.

  • Completing your FATE membership and conference registration by Jan 24, 2025 to be included in the conference programming and digital and printed schedule.

  • Confirming your final abstract drafts to chairs by Jan 24, 2025.

Is it possible for me to request a specific presentation day and time?
The session schedule is in development, and we cannot respond to requests for special time slots or accommodate preferences. We believe the last session on Saturday is as important and informative as the first session on Thursday, and it's important that all the sessions be well attended.

Do I need to submit my presentation in advance of the conference?
Presentations do not need to be submitted to FATE in advance, however, it is highly recommended that panel chairs and presenters coordinate with each other and review and practice presentations in advance of the conference.

What should I do with my session handouts and presentations if I would like to share them with the FATE community at large?
You are welcome to send a digital copy of your slides and/or handouts after the conference by emailing them to info@foundationsart.org.

My co-presenter, name, title, and/or institution has changed since my proposal. How do I update this for the conference program?
Please contact your panel chair with any presentation update requests. All changes must be submitted by January 24, 2025 to be reflected in the conference program.

 

FATE Awards

 

What awards are offered at the FATE 2025 Conference?
FATE offers four types of awards for the 2025 Conference:

  • FATE Distinguished Educator Award

  • FATE Emerging Educator Award

  • FATE Belonging and Community Award

  • FATE Conference Travel Awards


When can I apply for the FATE 2025 Conference Awards?
The application period for FATE 2025 Conference Awards opens on Friday, September 13, 2024, and closes on Friday, December 6, 2024, at midnight.

When will award winners be notified?
Award winners will be notified by January 31, 2025.

Are there any expectations for award recipients?
Yes, all award recipients are expected to attend the 2025 FATE Conference and the 2025 FATE Awards Ceremony. Recipients of the Belonging and Community Award are also expected to attend the 2025 FATE DEIA Session(s).

 

Can current FATE board members apply for these awards?
Current FATE board members are not eligible to apply for these awards. Previous board members may apply.

Is there a possibility of multiple winners in each category?
While not guaranteed, there is a possibility of multiple winners in each category. Decisions about multiple awards will be made in early 2025.

How are the awards selected?
Awards are selected by a diverse committee comprising FATE Board Members, the DEIA Committee Members, and the Conference Planning Team. The selection is based on the criteria outlined for each award category.

If I've already registered for the conference when I win an award, will I be reimbursed for the conference fee?
Yes, if you've already paid for your conference registration when you're notified of winning an award, you will be reimbursed for the conference fee.

For Travel Award recipients, how do I receive the travel funds?
Travel Awards are processed as reimbursements. You'll need to document your travel expenses and submit them for reimbursement after the conference. More detailed instructions will be provided to award recipients.

FATE Exhibition

Will there be an exhibition associated with the conference?
Yes, as part of our conference tradition, a members exhibition will be held on Friday, April 11th at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA.

Is there a vendor fair or exhibition area? If so, how can vendors participate?
Vendors or conference partners will have an opportunity to exhibit/workshop at the conference hotel and the host institution on Friday, April 23 (after 3 pm). The Vendors or conference partners can visit the partnership page at www.foundationsart.org, and or email development.fate@gmail.com for additional support and questions. 


What is the dress code for the conference?
There is no formal dress code. Attire ranges from casual to business. We recommend bringing a sweater or jacket as conference rooms can be cool.

Is there a mobile app for the conference?
A mobile app is not available for the conference.
